A customer injured on your premises
Slip and fall is the most common general liability claim there is. Defense costs start accruing whether or not the claim has any merit.
The foundation of business coverage. It responds when a third party is hurt, their property is damaged, or you are sued over something your business did.

Cline Mountain Insurance is a local Arizona agency serving families and businesses across the state, backed by trusted, nationally recognized carriers.
Sometimes because something happened. More often because a contract demanded it on a deadline.
Slip and fall is the most common general liability claim there is. Defense costs start accruing whether or not the claim has any merit.
A contractor breaks a fixture, a service vehicle clips a building, a repair goes wrong. Liability for damage to someone else's property is exactly this coverage.
Most job sites require proof of liability coverage with specific limits and additional-insured wording before a subcontractor can begin.
Commercial landlords require liability coverage naming them as additional insured. It is standard, and it holds up the lease when it is missing.
Products and completed operations coverage answers for claims arising after the sale or after the work is finished, which is when many of them surface.
Personal and advertising injury covers libel, slander, and copyright allegations arising from your advertising. Uncommon, but genuinely expensive when it lands.
Six coverage parts, of which the first three account for the overwhelming majority of claims.
Medical costs and legal fees when a customer, visitor, or member of the public is injured at your business or by your operations.
Pays for damage your business causes to property belonging to someone else during the course of your work.
Covers injury or damage claims arising from products you sold or work you finished, which often surface months after the job closed.
Responds to libel, slander, copyright infringement, and misappropriation claims arising from your advertising or communications.
Attorney fees and court costs, including for claims that turn out to be groundless. Defense frequently costs more than the eventual settlement.
Pays immediate, modest medical expenses for an injured party without requiring a lawsuit or a determination of fault, which often stops a claim escalating.
General liability is one layer of a stack rather than the whole stack. Here is the layer:
Customers on your floor, visitors at your shop, anyone injured by your operations off-site. The policy covers the medical costs, the legal defense, and any settlement or judgment that follows.
Work that damages a client's building, a service vehicle that hits a structure, a repair that fails and floods a floor. Damage to your own property is a separate coverage.
Less frequent but real: libel, slander, copyright issues in advertising, and similar non-physical allegations. Defense costs alone justify the coverage.
Usually bought because a contract demands it. Worth buying properly while you are there.
We issue certificates on request, normally the same day, with the additional-insured wording the contract specifies. Send us the contract language rather than a guess, because the wording and the policy endorsement have to line up.
Per occurrence and aggregate are different limits and the difference matters after the second claim in a policy year. We explain which one a contract is actually asking about, because they frequently ask for the wrong one.
Where a contract demands limits above the standard structure, a commercial umbrella above the liability policy is normally cheaper than raising the underlying limit. We price both and let you see the difference.
Tell us what the business does and what limits your contracts require. We will build to that.

Not by state law for most businesses. Commercially it is close to mandatory anyway, because landlords require it for leases, clients require it in contracts, and general contractors require it before subcontractors walk on site.
The market imposes what the statute does not. In practice, businesses that go without it are turning down work whether or not they realize it.
Your own employees' injuries, which is workers' compensation and is mandatory in Arizona. Professional advice and errors, which is errors and omissions coverage. Business vehicles, which is commercial auto. And damage to your own property, which is commercial property coverage.
General liability protects against claims brought by others. It is a layer in the stack, not the stack.
The market standard is one million dollars per occurrence with a two million dollar aggregate, and those are the figures most contracts and leases specify.
Higher-risk trades and larger contracts sometimes require more. Where they do, a commercial umbrella sitting above the general liability policy is usually a cheaper route to the higher number than raising the underlying limit.
A one-page document proving your coverage is in force, showing the limits and often naming a client, landlord, or general contractor as additional insured.
As your agency we issue certificates on request, usually the same day, including the additional-insured wording a contract requires. Send us the contract language rather than guessing at it, because the wording and the actual policy endorsement have to match.
It scales with trade, revenue, and payroll. Office-based and low-risk businesses often pay surprisingly little. Contractors pay more, because their claims run larger and their exposure is on someone else's property.
A quote takes a short conversation about what the business actually does day to day, which is a different question from what your license category says.
If you go to client sites, sell a product, or have anyone at all visit your workspace, yes. Claim size does not scale down because your business is small, and a single liability claim is one of the more reliable ways for a sole operator to be forced out of business.
It is also frequently the document that lets a one-person operation bid on the work that would grow it.
The per occurrence limit is the most the policy pays for any single claim. The aggregate is the most it pays across the whole policy term, no matter how many claims there are.
On a standard one and two million structure, one large claim can use the per occurrence limit while leaving room under the aggregate. Several claims in one year, though, can exhaust the aggregate and leave you exposed before the term is even up.
Send the contract or lease that is asking for coverage and we will tell you exactly what satisfies it.
