Claims follow the property, not just the owner
Carriers consult a shared loss database when quoting, and it reports claims made at that address as well as by that person. A house with two water claims under a previous owner can be quoted higher than the identical house next door, and the current owner has no idea why. You are entitled to see your own report, and it is worth doing before you shop.
A small claim can cost more than it pays
A claim slightly above the deductible can raise renewals for years and can cost a loss-free discount. The arithmetic frequently favors absorbing a small loss. A good agent will tell you not to claim, which is advice nobody gets from a call center.
Inquiries are not claims, but they get recorded
Calling to ask whether something would be covered can be logged as a claim inquiry by some carriers, and that notation can appear later. Asking a hypothetical question through an agent rather than an insurer avoids creating a record you did not intend.
