The umbrella assumes a floor that must stay there
Every umbrella states minimum liability limits required on the policies beneath it. If an underlying policy is canceled, non-renewed or quietly reduced, the umbrella does not step down to fill the space. Most forms treat you as if the required underlying limit were still in place, meaning the gap is yours.
Changing one policy can break the other
Switching auto carriers to save money, or reducing a limit at renewal, can take you below the umbrella requirement without anybody connecting the two. It happens most often when the policies sit with different agents, because nobody is looking at the whole structure.
One agent holding the whole picture prevents it
The practical defense is having the layers reviewed together. That is less about loyalty than about somebody noticing when a change to one policy undermines another.
