Every exposure needs a qualifying layer beneath it
An umbrella lists the underlying policies and the minimum limits it requires on each. If the farm operation, the equipment or a vehicle is not among them, the umbrella does not extend to a claim arising from it. Gaps here are structural rather than accidental and they are invisible until tested.
Farm vehicles are a common gap
A truck on a personal auto policy that is actually used agriculturally may not qualify as underlying cover for a farm-related claim. The vehicle, the use and the policy all have to line up, and frequently two of the three do.
Personal umbrellas exclude business pursuits
A genuine commercial farming operation is a business, and a personal umbrella is not the instrument for it. The right structure is commercial liability with a commercial umbrella above it. Getting that wrong produces a policy that looks like protection and is not.
